Fantasy Baseball: Position Strength

To get a clear sense of position depth, I compared the average Rebel Ratings of the starters at each position. (For these purposes, I assumed a 12-team league and thus took the average of the top 12 players at each infield position and the top 36 outfielders.) For more info on how Rebel Ratings work, see Top 50 Hitters for 2009.

Here are the results, sorted from strongest position to weakest:

PositionAverage Starter's Rebel Rating
1B3.52
OF1.80
3B1.35
SS0.76
2B0.13
C-4.03

No surprises here, other than the total domination at first base and perhaps the magnitude of the derth at catcher. Still, it's valuable to know how the positions stack up when making your picks. For example, given an outfielder and third baseman with equal production, the third baseman has more value for fantasy purposes.

To give a highly accurate sense of how players rank with their position eligibility factored in, I will soon put out "position-weighted" Rebel Rankings that sort players by their value (i.e., Rebel Rating) in comparison to other players at their position. So keep an eye out for that!
