Milwaukee reliever Mitch Stetter isn't exactly making headlines like Michael Jackson. In fact, he gets less pub than Conor Jackson. (He's owned in just 1.3 percent of ESPN leagues.) But if you're in a league that values good relievers, he's a hidden gem who can help you out. Even though the 28-year-old lefty wasn't really utilized in the Majors until last season, he does own an impressive resume. Over six seasons in the minors, he posted a 3.78 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, and struck out 9.1 batters while walking just 2.5 per nine innings.
Struggles at the Triple-A level likely postponed his arrival in The Show, but now that he's here, he's clearly proving he belongs. Here's the evidence:
- As a Major Leaguer, he owns a 2.98 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 11.1 K/9 ratio.
- This year, he boasts a 2.63 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, and 12.0 K/9 to go along with 13 holds.
- Over the last 10 games, he's racked up four holds, a save, and 17 K over eight innings while giving up no runs, three hits and a walk. That's right, more than two K per IP!
According to
this scouting report, Stetter has a "deceptive drop-down delivery" that is effective against lefties, but he can get lit up when he struggles with command and doesn't have "enough of a pitching repertoire to be effective in lengthy stints." Fortunately, the Brewers never use him in lengthy stints. (His longest outing of the season was 1.1 innings.) And clearly his command has been stellar over the last two months.
He doesn't throw quite as many innings as, say, Alfredo Aceves or Ramon Ramirez. (Stetter has logged 24; Aceves and Ramirez each have 33.1.) But he can certainly help lower your ERA and WHIP while boosting Ks...especially in leagues with max innings or starts.
