Slow Auction Day 11 Observations

  • Rowland-Smith is remarkably consistent. In fact, his minor- and major-league numbers are nearly identical. Over nine seasons in the minors, he compiled a 3.64 ERA and 1.30 WHIP. Over three seasons in the Majors, he sports a 3.62 ERA and 1.30 WHIP. Not surprisingly, he struck out batters at a higher rate in the minors (8.6 K9 compared to 6.1 in the Majors). He should clearly be worth more than the buck I spent on him and could very well produce more than $10 value.
  • Liriano is an interesting purchase at $16. Seems high given his recent history, but then again we all know what he's capable of. I did notice that the owner who purchased him had way too much money left to burn. He literally had $100 left with just one hitting spot and some bench spots to fill. That's an egregious case of waiting too long to dole out the dough. By the end of the auction, there's no one left to spend big money on. He ended up filling his roster with $64 unspent. To me, that is the biggest auction no-no. Think of what $64 can buy you? I got Adrian Gonzalez, V-Mart, and McCutchen for that money! It's for this reason that I err on the side of spending money too early, when you know good talent is going to be there. Of course, it's still a balance, where you want to look for good value and hope for some cheap steals later on. I don't recommend spending $100 on Pujols and Hanley, like another owner in my league did. But at least he got something for his money!
  • Plenty of good deals at this point in the draft: Conor Jackson ($2), Cameron Maybin ($2), Vernon Wells ($2), Nolan Reimold ($4), and Colby Rasmus ($2).
  • Latos at $2 could be a nice payoff if he secures a spot in the rotation.

More tomorrow....
