Observations
- As you can see, my activity slowed down once the big hitters were off the board. I'll be active again when the cheap starters are rolling off the board.
- I just had to have Quentin. I think he's going to be a great value this year and could easily produce like a $30 player. If your league has a LF spot, he's potentially in the top five at that position. In reality, though, he may play a lot of DH, which would help keep him healthy. Not that I put much stock in spring games, but his two-homer game on Saturday gave me that much more incentive to outbid for him. It probably cost me a few bucks, as well, guessing that other owners upped their bids on hearing the news of his big day.
- Cordero and Street for $10? Ridiculous. Had I known closers would come so cheap, I would have passed up what seemed like unbeatable deals on Bailey ($16) and Mo ($18) in favor of cheaper alternatives (like Hoffman who I later snagged for $11). That way I could have saved $12-$14 without giving up many saves. (With nine pitcher slots, the relievers' other stats are going to be diluted anyway.) Then, I could have used the savings on mid-range starters with upside like Bucholz (who's a nice pick at $8) and Zambrano.
- After Strasburg's performance today, I get the feeling I'm to be kicking myself all year long for not beating that $4 bid! Of course, I've been spooked by talk of him starting the year in the minors, but it appears this kid could be great right away.
- Alfonso Soriano is well worth the risk at $8.
