I'm a big fan of the Lewis and Masterson purchases. I currently have Lewis on my pitching staff as well, and I plan to pick up Masterson as soon as a trade I agreed upon goes through. Dierkes seems to think Lewis could be worth quite a bit this year, as per his starting pitcher rankings.

Yeah, auctions are a lot more complicated than snake drafts. It's very tough to find the perfect balance between overspending and underspending.

In my first auction, my strategy was to fill my roster with guys who were around $15, so I would have no holes. What ended up happening was that I missed out on high-end players and then watched numerous players who were worth $15 go for far less as teams ran out of money. So my roster ended up being full of middle-tier players, while other teams were able to assemble a mix of upper- and middle-tier guys.

So I've since modified my approach. I still try to avoid the $40-$50 purchases but target $20-$30 guys, figuring I can fill many of my spots with Adrian Gonzalezes and Jeters and then find some good deals like Crisp, McCutchen, and Milledge to man the remaining spots.

I also like to invest in shallow positions like C, 2B, and SS, figuring it's much tougher to get good production for cheap at those spots...or pickup gems at those positions during the season.

I agree that leaving so much money left was not the best strategy for me, but I was also worried about spending too much money too quickly, and being left with $15 to spend on 10 players, or something like that. I at least had the peace of mind of knowing that I could've had anyone I wanted, although I should've realized that earlier, as I bowed out on some cheap buys, in fear of over-spending, which is actually why I went so high on Liriano.
Considering this was my first slow draft - I took a couple days' break towards the beginning. purposely or accidentally, that's for my unconscious to decide - I think I did pretty well for myself. I found a lot of great values, I think - Aaron Hill for $17, Miguel Montero for $12.
I guess you learn from experience, though. Now I take this one and use it for my future auctions, both slow and normal.
